DEPARTMENT: Consultation & Reference Laboratory
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Position is responsible for overall operation of the laboratory including compliance, quality control and customer and interdepartmental relations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned. Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
- Oversee daily operations of laboratory and ensure efficiency and compliance. Function as General Supervisor (CLIA >88), and maintain departmental documents as required.
- Maintain technical abilities to evaluate and instruct staff and students in department.
- Develop/administer departmental budget, maintain adequate staffing for department, and maintain adequate supplies for department.
- Write and review SOPs for department and review all quality control activities for department and institute and document appropriate corrective action as needed.
- Communicate with Medical Director as needed and serve as liaison between laboratory and other departments.
- Prepare lectures for internal and external educational program.
- Enforce The Blood Center's policies on EEO, Affirmative Action and Safety/Health.

Full time: must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.
Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Weekend and Holidays

Manages subordinate supervisors who supervise employees in the Consultation & Reference Laboratory. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, scheduling and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
MLS (ASCP or equivalent) from an accredited program; Minimum of 3 years recent (within past 2 years) experience in blood banking and immunohematology plus supervisory experience.

Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS (ASCP) or equivalent
Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) (required)
OFFICIAL CERTIFICATION MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
