SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Position performs work requiring critical thinking in component production and completion of duties related to hospital orders/deliveries, etc. throughout scheduled shift and during after-hours calls.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Process, organize, identify and document component production daily with complete accuracy into the computer system or manually if needed.

  • Complete incoming and outgoing hospital orders, maintain proper arrangement of blood component inventory, and maintain hospital inventories within predetermined ranges.

  • Take inventory of available blood supply and maintain proper arrangement of units available for distribution;ensure proper receipt/documentation of incoming inventory.

  • Pack all blood components to meet/maintain transit temperature requirements.

  • Deliver blood components to and pick up returns from designated locations.

  • Inspect and verify blood component numbering, labeling, and appearance.

  • Perform necessary steps to remove unacceptable products from inventory; assist as necessary in the daily process of securing quarantined components.

  • Provide assistance with daily release, audit of inventory, and component production.

  • Perform necessary quality control activities and documentation.

  • Organize, apply product labels, and store all components produced with complete accuracy, ensuring all procedures are followed.

  • Promptly respond and prepare special patient use requests/assignments and recognize/interpret special procedures or tags on units.

  • Rotate on-call duties to provide after-hours deliveries and address any equipment alarms.

  • Maintain the laboratory in a clean and safe manner, must comply with OSHA, FDA, AABB, cGMP and other regulatory standards to ensure accuracy, potency, proper identity, and safety of all products.

Safety

Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.  Must comply with all applicable safety rules and policies and be willing to report actual and potential safety violations to the appropriate supervisor or manager.

Attendance

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.

Regular Hours

Full time:  must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.

Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs..

Weekend and Holidays

Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Off-Site Work

Must be able to work at off-site locations occasionally and to either transport self to same.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school Diploma or GED.  Prior experience in a production or inventory control environment preferred but not required.

DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE FOR EMPLOYEES PERFORMING MODERATE OR HIGH COMPLEXITY TESTING

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Texas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, independently.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations where only limited standardization exists. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent internal and external customer service skills

Computer literacy (Safe Trace) required

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
