TITLE/CODE:                          QC Technician II

DEPARTMENT:                      QC Laboratory

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Under supervision, this position prepares and tests samples from blood components to determine if the products meet established quality control standards.  Involves frequent contact with internal and external customers, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Prepare samples from blood components for quality control testing. Prepare reagents, as needed.
  • Perform quality control testing of apheresis platelet products, pre-donation samples and leuko-reduced red blood cells, random platelets, whole blood, cryoprecipitate, and other products as needed. Perform testing for bacterial contamination of apheresis and random donor platelets.
  • Enter results into computer system, as applicable.
  • Monitor inventory of reagents, supplies, etc. as needed.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities within The Blood Center.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers.

Attendance

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.

Regular Hours

Full time:  must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.

Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.

Weekend and Holidays

Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Off-Site Work

Must occasionally be able to work at off site locations and transport self to same.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associate degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university and at least one year prior job related experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE FOR EMPLOYEES PERFORMING MODERATE OR HIGH COMPLEXITY TESTING

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

MT/MLS BB/SBB (ASCP or equivalent) is preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and standard operating procedures.  Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute percentages and volumes.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be flexible with working hours and days

Computer Literate:  Microsoft Office, Safetrace

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to blood and blood components as well as other biohazard materials, moving mechanical parts and extreme cold.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
