SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the Processing Laboratory Manager, this position assists in overseeing operations and overall management of the Processing Laboratory including supervision of staff, maintenance of all policies, procedures and quality control practices and the maintenance of effective customer and inter/intradepartmental relations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned. Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
- Organize and supervise daily activities in the NDTS and NAT laboratories. In the absence of the Manager, assumes co-responsibility of all laboratory operations with the Asst. Manager – Non Technical to include monitoring inventory and communications with vendors, Central Supply and Business Operations.
- Perform testing as necessary to ensure efficient operations.
- Daily ensure all testing (routine, repeat, confirmatory) is performed on all internal/external samples; timely notify clients/GCRBC staff when there are delays.
- Ensure all test results are updated, committed and/or transmitted; work with the appropriate staff to clear test requisitions daily.
- Assist with investigation, documentation and corrective action development for the QIR process.
- Assist with SOP review, creation, validation, approval and training.
- Confer with Clinical Trials Laboratory staff to evaluate feasibility, planning and execution of testing for vendor clinical trials.
- Maintain statistical data for all test procedures performed in the NDTS and NAT laboratories.
- Evaluate, validate and implement new equipment and/or hardware/software upgrades in the NDTS and NAT laboratories.
- Enforce The Blood Center's policies on EEO, Affirmative Action and Safety/Health.
- Complete at least 12 hours continuing education per year.

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.
Full time: must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.
Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Assists Manager in carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; Assist with appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science or a related science from four-year college or university; plus at least five years of previous job-related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT MUST BE PROVIDED and KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
MLS (ASCP) required. Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) desirable
OFFICIAL COPY OF CERTIFICATION MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Job duties involved an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
