TITLE/CODE:                          Consultation Technician II, RDP / LABTEC2D

DEPARTMENT:                      Consultation & Reference Laboratory (Rare Donor Program)

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Under moderate supervision of Consultation Management, this position prepares special blood components and performs donor tests.  Responsibilities involve frequent contact with internal and external customers, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

 

  • Evaluate and process special component requests per established guidelines.
  • Communicate with external customers regarding patient requests for rare blood, rare donor donations, and/or ARDP.
  • Record, place and fill orders for antigen-negative rare red blood cells in SafeTrace.
  • Monitor Rare Donor antigen-typed inventory.
  • Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • Prepare washed, frozen, and deglycerolized RBCs. 
  • Perform equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Prepare reagents.
  • Participate in department new hire training program.

Attendance

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center's sole discretion.

Regular Hours

Full time: Must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.

Overtime or additional hours (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Must be available and willing to work such overtime or additional hours per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.

Weekends and Holidays

Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

MT/MLT degree from an accredited college or university with certification (ASCP or equivalent) is preferred. New health science major graduates are eligible to apply.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT OF DEGREE MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP or equivalent certification) or equivalent to 2-year degree in applied science or clinical experience.

 

PROOF OF CERTIFICATION MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.

 

LANGUAGESKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and standard operating procedures.  Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute percentages and volumes.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be flexible with working hours and days.

Computer literate:  Microsoft Office Word and Access, BECS (blood established computer software), LMS.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to blood and blood components as well as other biohazardous materials, moving mechanical parts and extreme cold.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
