Position Title: Consultation Specialist, RDP 

Shift: Mon - Fri, 4 pm - 12 am

Under moderate supervision of Consultation Management, this position prepares special blood components and performs patient testing.  Responsibilities involve frequent contact with internal and external customers, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Evaluates and processes special component requests per established guidelines.
  • Communicates with external customers regarding patient requests for rare blood, rare donor donations, and/or ARDP.
  • Provides technical support and assistance with communicating Rare Donor needs to Collections, Marketing and Recruitment staff.
  • Collaborates with Hospital Services and Business Development staff to optimize hospital utilization of antigen-typed inventory.
  • Supports the Commercial Donor Program, including order fulfillment, shipping, ad-hoc requests and vendor management.
  • Adheres to FDA, CLIA, OSHA, AABB and CAP regulations, as well as cGMP standards and internal procedures and protocols.
  • Promotes a positive work environment and exhibits team supportive behaviors. Actively helps team members to achieve optimal department results.
  • Assists in the implementation of strategies, marketing and business plans in order to maintain current clients and to increase client base in all service areas.
  • Serves as mentor and technical resource for RDP staff.
  • Notifies management or other appropriate persons of problems or issues as appropriate.
  • Performs antigen screening, other routine serological evaluation in Consultation Laboratory.
  • Assists in preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participates in QC and QA improvements within the department.
  • Records, places, and fills orders for antigen-negative rare red blood cells in the BECS (blood established computer software).
  • Monitors Rare Donor antigen-typed inventory.
  • Monitors inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • Prepares washed and deglycerolized RBCs. 
  • Freezes Rare RBCs
  • Performs equipment preventative maintenance.
  • Performs reagent preparation as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of statistical reports and billing data.
  • Assists in the resolution of billing questions and inquiries for internal and external customers.
  • Scans documents to the Imaging Application.
  • Receives specimens and orders in the Transfusion Management System.
  • Issues and Returns products in the Transfusion Management System.
  • Participates in department new hire training program.
  • Supports validation and implementation of new tests/equipment/software.
  • Performs sickle cell screening on donor samples.
  • Prepares Reconstituted RBCs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; responsibilities may be modified at management’s discretion.

 

We need someone who:

MLT from an accredited program (ASCP or equivalent) with 4 years recent laboratory experience in a Blood Bank or Immunohematology Reference Laboratory.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to blood and blood components as well as other biohazardous materials, moving mechanical parts and extreme cold.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
