TITLE/CODE: Technical Supervisor, Consultation & Reference (Specialist in Blood Bank Certification)
DEPARTMENT: Consultation & Reference Laboratory
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the Consultation & Reference Laboratory Manager, this position is responsible for all technical aspects of the Immunohematology Reference Lab program, assists in supervision of staff, development and maintenance of policies and procedures and monitoring of quality assurance activities of the department. Involves frequent contact with internal and external customers, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned. Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
§ Organizes and supervises daily technical activities to ensure compliance with AABB IRL standards.
§ Function as IRL Technical Supervisor/Consultant (CLIA >88), and maintain departmental documents as required.
§ Performs testing and reviews of IRL cases. Performs other duties in the Consultation and Reference Laboratory as assigned.
§ Evaluates/Monitors performance and quality of test results.
§ Prepares lectures for and actively participates in local/regional industry committees/programs (AABB, ABC, other).
§ Manages training and competency programs
§ Assists in interviewing, hiring, evaluation, counseling and dismissal of employees.
§ Assists in preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
§ Participates in QC and QA improvements within the department.
§ Enforces The Blood Center's policies on EEO, Affirmative Action and Safety/Health.
Directly supervises all technical aspects of testing performed by Consultation Tech I's, II's, III’s and Specialists in the IRL program. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting the C&R Manager with interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing documentation for performance appraisals; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
MLS (ASCP or equivalent) from an accredited program; SBB with a minimum of 3 years recent (within past 2 years) experience in blood banking and immunohematology plus supervisory experience.
OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) ASCP or equivalent
OFFICIAL CERTIFICATION MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute percentages and volumes.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Excellent communication skills
Computer Literate: Microsoft Office, Safetrace, Safetrace Tx and Business Objects preferred
