DEPARTMENT:                      Consultation & Reference Laboratory

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Consultation & Reference Laboratory Manager, this position monitors inventory of antigen-typed RBCs, assists in supervision of staff, development and maintenance of policies and procedures and monitoring of quality assurance activities of the department.  Involves frequent contact with internal/external customers and donors, requiring good judgment, diplomacy and tact.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Organizes and supervises daily activities of the Rare Donor Program, including reports, antigen typing, and equipment maintenance
  • Maintains and manages Rare Donor antigen-typed inventory.
  • Provides technical support and assistance with communicating Rare Donor needs to Collections, Marketing and Recruitment staff
  • Collaborates with Hospital Services and Business Development staff to optimize hospital utilization of antigen-typed inventory
  • Supervises daily activities of the Commercial Donor Program, including order fulfillment, shipping, ad-hoc requests and vendor management
  • Monitors inventory of reagents, supplies, etc.
  • Performs antigen screening, other routine serological evaluation in Consultation Laboratory. Performs other duties in the Consultation and Reference Laboratory as assigned. 
  • Prepares lectures for local/regional education programs (MT, SBB, other). 
  • Trains new employees.  
  • Assists in interviewing, hiring, evaluation, counseling and dismissal of employees.
  • Assists in preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participates in QC and QA improvements within the department.
  • Enforces The Blood Center's policies on EEO, Affirmative Action and Safety/Health.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises Consultation Tech I's, II's, III’s and Specialists in the Rare Donor Program.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related science from four-year college or university; and a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS

Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS (ASCP) or equivalent

Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) (preferred)

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute percentages and volumes.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
