RADIATION SAFETY POSITION:  Employees in this position may be eligible for unescorted access to blood irradiation equipment.  If so, the employee will be subject to additional background screening to include personal reference checks, fingerprinting and local, state and federal criminal background checks.

DEPARTMENT:                      Component Production


Reporting to the Assistant Manager – Component Production, assists in the supervision and coordination of all routine daily activities concerning the preparation of blood components.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add or to change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Directly supervise staff in the preparation, storage, labeling, and quarantine of components, including special components, assuring that all components are properly managed according to standard operation procedures in a reasonable amount of time. 
  • Monitor all documents to ensure that they are complete and accurate including component preparation records (daily) to assure that all adjustments have been made to accurately reflect component preparation.  
  • At the direction of the Component Laboratory Assistant Manager, maintain daily goals for the preparation of various components’; maintain specific inventory levels. 
  • Provide training for new and incumbent staff; assist with competency assessments. Act as coach and mentor to staff to maximize staff’s professional development.
  • Assist with the troubleshooting of component preparation problems and instrument malfunctions.  Make recommendations and/or corrections as needed. 
  • Assist with biohazard waste management including review and reconciliation of vendor receipts, vendor interactions, and internal organizational waste management.
  • Directly supervise staff in the RRPL area including organizing, preparing, packing, and shipping of non-transfusable products for research, manufacturing, or Clinical Trials.
  • Assure products are properly managed according to standard operating procedure and client specifications in a reasonable amount of time.
  • At the direction of the Component Laboratory Assistant Manager, manage special projects in accordance with established policy.
  • Enforce The Blood Center's policies on EEO, Affirmative Action, cGMPs, and Safety/Health to include ensuring that every component handled maintains the highest possible quality.

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.

Regular Hours

Full time:  must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.

Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.

Weekend and Holidays

Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.


Directly supervises employees in the Component Lab. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

High School Diploma or GED; minimum six months of related work experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and work experience.




Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Must be able to work irregular hours

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood and/or blood components, as well as other biohazard materials.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job duties involved an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
