TITLE:                                    Technical Operations Support Specialist

DEPARTMENT:                      Clinical Trials

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Procurement and Clinical Trials (CT), this position collects and/or processes samples for specimen collection projects and Clinical Trials.  Interacts with physicians, hospital blood bank personnel, QC Lab PAS, Hospital Services and QA Departments when performing unit recall and look-back procedures in accordance to departmental SOPs and FDA regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned.  Management retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

·        Performs unit Recall and Lookback procedures following departmental SOPs and FDA regulations.

·        Accurately and legibly records and files Recall and Lookback documentation.

·        Enters relevant information into computer databases with speed and accuracy.

·        Performs computer searches, matches, verifications and printouts as assigned.

·        Performs pre-donation CT subject informed consents, venipuncture and post-venipuncture care of CT subjects in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and Study Protocol.

·        Accurately and legibly completes subject records and enters forms into computer as directed  in a timely manner.

·        Attends and completes continuing education and training in phlebotomy and CT procedures.

·        Maintains acceptable level of proficiency in required phlebotomy procedures.

·        Assists with coordinating and planning the clinical trials procurement schedule.

·        Assists with Clinical Trials protocol activity including assisting the Clinical Trials Coordinator with sample preparation for testing and data entry.

·        Aliquots, caps, packages and ships procurement specimens as directed.

·        Follows all safety regulations concerning the handling of biohazard material.

·        Cleans work area as assigned.

Attendance

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in The Blood Center’s sole discretion.

Regular Hours

Full time:  must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, or such other days or hours per week as The Blood Center determines are necessary to meet business needs.

Overtime (applicable only to non-exempt positions)

Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as The Blood Center determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.

Weekend and Holidays

Must be available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as The Blood Center determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma; Previous phlebotomy experience and training required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

None

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Must be able to exercise sufficient judgment to determine when to involve supervisor or manager for variances or problems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood and/or blood components, as well as any other biohazard materials.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job duties involved an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
