Under supervision of the Processing Laboratory Manager, the position performs viral, non-viral and other required tests on blood. Coordinate NDTS Lab workflow as directed by management staff.

In this role, you will:
- Conducts staff training and competency assessments following training and obtains current information in the field through utilization of in-services, workshops and seminars.
- Reviews testing paperwork to ensure test validity prior to updating results to Laboratory Information System, enters and verifies manual results, quarantines units as required as well as performs computer searches, matches, and printouts.
- Performs testing, prepares reagents, and performs/documents quality control and preventive maintenance according to standard operating procedures and completes results in a timely manner.
- Fills out all required forms and pulls samples for repeat reactive and confirmatory testing and cleans and restocks work area at the end of the shift.
- Initiates troubleshooting of equipment and reports outcome to Supervisor; assists with monitoring and ordering of supplies and reagents.
- Responds to client concerns in a timely and professional manner, communicates effectively with internal and external customers, and resolves problems and answers technical questions when supervisory personnel are not available.
- Follows safety procedures including proper use of personal protective equipment, appropriate use of engineering controls, and performance of safe work practices as stated in the safety manual.
- Performs special projects as assigned by supervisor including review of quality control documents, and development and validation of SOPs and participates in quality control/quality assurance activities within the department.
- Enforces The Blood Center’s policies on EEO, Affirmative Action and Safety/Health.
- Complete at least 12 hours continuing education per year.
- Additional duties as assigned.
We need someone who has:
MLS from an accredited program (Medical Laboratory Science) School Graduate, eligible to sit for ASCP certification or MLS (ASCP) certified with minimum of 3 years recent experience in lab performing same or similar tests. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree with a science (Biology or Chemistry) major which meets the CLIA amendment for science hours required to perform moderate and high complexity testing with laboratory experience. Candidates with MLT (ASCP) and a minimum 5 year recent experience in a lab performing same or similar tests will also be considered.
OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT MUST BE PROVIDED AND KEPT IN PERSONNEL FILE.
MLS must be ASCP (or equivalent) certified upon hire or eligible to sit for certification exam. Exam must be taken within 6 months of hire date. MLT must have ASCP certification upon hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to blood and blood components as well as other biohazard materials, moving mechanical parts and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Job duties involved an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
